The Royal Docks area, located in the East End of London, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The docks were constructed between 1855 and 1921 to handle the increasing volume of cargo passing through the port of London. At their peak, they were the largest enclosed docks in the world, covering an area of 250 acres and with a total quayside of 13 miles.
During World War II, the docks were heavily targeted by German bombers, resulting in significant damage and loss of life. Following the war, the docks were gradually modernized, but by the 1970s, they had become largely obsolete due to the growth of container shipping and the inability of the docks to accommodate larger vessels.
Today, the Royal Docks area has been redeveloped into a thriving business and residential district, with a mix of modern buildings and historic landmarks such as the Grade II listed Docklands Pumping Station. The docks themselves have been transformed into a hub for water sports, with a variety of activities available including kayaking, paddleboarding, and wakeboarding.
